CITY BRANDING  EVENT ORGANISE  PLACEMAKING

Kanaya is a small city in the south part of Chiba prefecture.

The city is near to the famous Nokogiri mountains have abundant natural resources, and has remained unspoilt.

We started this project to promote the area’s unique scenery and culture to outsiders place,

creating an off-space where people can gather.

Kanaya Base is a shared space for artists and local residents.

Many events and workshops run by project members have already taken place here.

Project members who live in the city belong to the community and become a bridge with other members who live outside of the city. Both groups come up with ideas for how to invite visitors to Kanaya Base. Initial visitors often return to the city with other friends.

First of all, we need to get to know the local people in order to understand what they want.

Then we can start collaborating with other experts to help promote the city. Designing a place is the first step.

First, place making is a significant part of a local project. Second, the hardest part of community engagement is how the place (member) adjusts to the city. The beneficial way in this case was some project members who frequently visit there or move into the city becomes a bridge between local communities. That is why other members can

communicate and come up with ideas from outside.
